Looking forward to sharing Culturescaping & ConceptWares with HC alumni community.
I entered Hampshire as a maker (textile crafts mostly) but wasn't up to the challenge
of imagining myself an artist - or philosopher - yet. I accidentally became a semiotician, and less accidentally, a Cultural Studies major. Leaving HC, I pursued all kinds of art paths: making, exhibiting, trucking, fabrication, curation and installation: wanting to: "build what I can think."
I'm extremely pleased to be back these past two semesters as a guest lecturer/visiting prof and now as 'thinking-architect' for this showcase.

ConceptWares: Meaning thru Form
Concept-rendering for social impact. We are bridging social sciences, design-thinking and meaning-creation with theorising, prototyping and modeling. Our work supports better: data filtering & visualization; UX-, organizational-, policy- & communication-design.

Off-shoot Org: Pulling together new friends, newly-met HC alums and others to help me guide Culturescaping, Social Literacies… and my other endeavors, it occurred to me that we were an ad hoc assembly of concept technologists [Luke Kaven], a.k.a., social scientists, artists, thinkers and tinkerers engaging with the delivery of meaning through form and what Sylvio Codella calls: dimensional imagination.

ART - SCI - PHI: INTERSECTION AND INQUIRY proposal
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

Naming art, science and philosophy, we invoke constellations of endless association. How we orient, navigate and travel these spectral trails in our work and lives takes on increasing importance - both daunting and exhilerating - as innovation is increasingly pursued at the intersection of disciplines.

• How do we, and how should we, make sense of discrete nodes and odd hunches against the backdrop of vast informations and the Babel of different disciplines, their modes and their lexicons?

• How are we to discern elements, or patterns, of innovative, generative novelty on the one hand, and give order to the unfamiliar on the other – especially when so much of our cognitive adaptation is based on recognizeability?

Living at the front end of big data and unparalled connectivity, the need to craft illuminating metaphors and agile models is felt across domains. This workshop is an extension of the NYC Art-Sci-Phi Dinner Series hosted by HC alums, Tracy Ann Essoglou and Daniel Kohn, and our ongoing collaborations with other HC entities, including CBD.

We invite anyone and everyone who is interested in discussing these intersections and their applicability in design thinking, computational modeling, data collection, artistic, activisitic, scientific and/or philosophical inquiry and practice. Our goal is to establish an ongoing community of students, alums, faculty and friends with an eye towards extending each other's interests, impact, and reach, and those of Hampshire as a unique institution of extreme learning. WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

Tinkering exists in all disciplines, practices and mediums. It can be used to describe the continuously inventive adjustments practioners make in virtually any field: seamstress to photoshoot stylist, builder to architect, certainly mechanic and inventor, but also philosopher, designer, technologist, scientist....

Tinkering is made of hunches and born of experience. It is modeling, trial and error selection, but also casting – like a net. It's the willingness to trawl for the unexpected solution; knowing when to look straight, and when to blur, when to go wide angle or zoom, to use one's peripheral vision or go deep. Tinkering consists of finding parts that will best address a requirement or function - material or conceptual - as one moves from the general to the specific, or vice versa. It oscillates between imagination and 'the right tool for the job.' It is a technique of inquiry that launches innovation.

TINKERING AS TECHNIQUE is a uniquely Hampshire workshop created by two former Hampshire students who saw each other across campus, but only met and spoke 35 years later at a recent commencement, and have speaking ever since.

We're inviting HC alums, students, friends & family, to discuss how their hunches led them to tinker, their tinkering led to substance, and their substance to success: personal or profressional; material, mechanical, conceptual, philosophical, literary, visionary, artistic and/or scientific. Our goal is to collect these stories with an archival interest in furthering Hampshire's unique imprint on scholarship and practice. We look forward to facilitating this easy share of ideas and experience on behalf of our remarkable education and community.
